An old memory has just come to me and I thought I'd post it here before it faded. About 1965 I was walking through Old Hartlepool with Bill Boagey (75 yr old amateur historian and ex ship plater). We passed a house in Durham Street on a corner just opposite the Commercial Hotel (or was it the Beehive Inn?). He stopped and looked into the window of the downstairs room pointing out a large old fashioned white wood table and said, 'When the first Ropner came here from Sweden he was penniless and actually rented space in that room; in fact he's supposed to have lived under that table'.
Hope I've got that right.
