who are or were canmar john?? kev.

They were CANADA MARITIME, latterly part of the CP Ships empire (though probably not when these ships were under their operation). CP and subsidiaries, of course, were swallowed up by Hapag Lloyd/TUI last year.

More to the point, what was wrong with Canmar?

Anyway, I posed a photo of ASIAFREIGHTER as OOCL ATLANTIC here a while back, see:

Old one I know but the vessels were converted at HDW, Hamburg 1981. Two options were considered: 1) Single slow speed diesel 2) Twin medium speed. The latter was chosen as the single engine would take up too much of the existing container capacity. With the twin engine installation only a few slots were lost (in the hold forward of the bridge) due to the diesel engines being greater in height than the original gas turbines. During the conversion process Seatrain went bust and Ahrenkiel bought the vessels having lined up a long-term charter to Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL). They were eventually purchased by OOCL itself. Canmar gets a mention as this company time-chartered one of the ships for a year from CGM (which bought two of them after OOCL sold them in the early 90's) for its UK/N. Europe - Montral service when she was renamed Canmar Enterprise. I visited the ship in the UK at this time and can say she was in a fairly run down state.
