View Full Version : Hms Active 1915

I am trying to ascertain if HMS ACTIVE was involved in an incident in Scapa Flow in 1915, but I can't find any mention of it on the internet.
I am looking at a member of the ship's company spending over an hour in the water and being subsequently invalided out of the service with resultant kidney problems. This is purely for interest on behalf of his descendants. I can only assume that he went overboard either from HMS ACTIVE or from a ship's boat or an MFV?
Any ideas, please?

I think you can start by following this:
Go to MSN
Type HMS Active
Go to Active Class Cruser HMS Active
and press enter.
Good luck with your research

Thanks very much, Martin
This appears to be part of the event. It's not the man I'm researching, who was a Shipwright. However, I'll pass it on to his grand-daughter. She will be pleased.

Presumably the Peshawur was in trouble, in that case, in 1914.
Peshawur, 7,634 tons, built 1905 by Barclay Curle & Co Glasgow Passenger Cargo Vessel,
defensively-armed, 9 October 1917, 7 miles SE ¼ E from Ballyquintin Point, Co Down,
torpedoed without warning and sunk by submarine U-96, 13 lives lost.
HMS Active; Built Pembroke Dockyard, completed December 1911.
Leader 2nd Destroyer Flotilla with the Harwich Force; 1915 part of the Grand Fleet.
The Battle of Dogger Bank January 24th 1915 - German force four battle cruisers,
four light cruisers, and 22 destroyers and the British Grand Fleet of six battle cruisers,
eight light cruisers, and 28 destroyers which had left Scapa Flow on the same day
to carry out a sweep of the North Sea. So that appears to place HMS Active at Scapa Flow,
together with the rest of the Grand Fleet.
If you go to NA
you will find that HMS Active's papers for 1913-1916 are held
under ADM 53/32738. Best Wishes, Raymond

Thank you, Raymond
You are a star! I will pass this on to the man's grand daughter. Now she knows where to look.
Many thanks from over the Tamar,
