Among some memorabilia I purchased some time ago was a slim copy of The Naval Engineering Review July 1931 price nine pence. At the back were details of the forthcoming examination for Acting Mate (E), a copy of the exam for February 1931 was included and this to me seems to indicate that a high level of knowledge was required for this rank. There were papers on Mathematics, Applied Mechanics, General Science parts A and B, Engineering 1 and 2 and Heat and Steam and each paper required two and half hours for completion. Can anyone enlighten me on what an Acting Mate (E) was and was this a prelude to becoming a Warrant Engineer RN. Regards, Roger Bentley
