As a Marconi R/O joined Elders & Fyffes "Golfito" at Avonmouth in June 1960 as 3rd R/O. Subsequently sailed as R/O with Joe Constantine's "Lochwood", Hall Bros "Bretwalda", Ellerman's "City of Lucknow", Shell (ex-Eagle Oil) "San Florentino", Cairn Line's "Cairngowan" and finally Regent Tankship's "Regent Pembroke" (subsequently "Texaco Pembroke") before swallowing the hook in 1966. Married in '67 and worked for Marconi ashore on the Tyne and in Chelmsford until retiring in 2002.

Had a great time, no bad ships or bad trips. Great life for a single young man but towards the end with 15-hour turnrounds and 56-day round trips between the Gulf and Caribbean/South America, life was not too exciting.

Joined the Merchant Navy in 1954 I think...14 years old...as a deck boy and joined my first ship, "Waimate" 3 weeks later. Sailed on quite a few different ships and never found a bad one at all. Stayed at sea for about 10 years, swallowed the hook and got married but still retained an avid interest in all things nautical.
