The QM2 is to visit Auckland on February 17th on her round the world voyage and I would think it worth the trip up to see her.
Once upon a time one could get a pass to go onboard visiting liners, I wonder if this is still possible?
Anybody out there with any information on this that I might find helpful?
cheers edith

I thought that QM2s first round trip was not until 2007, maybe I am wrong, as for getting aboard I think you would need a lot of luck.

Due to security reasons I don't think you are allowed to do that anymore but of course things might be different in other ports of the world. Alan Hill Bridgeport, Pa. USA

Hi Edith

QM2 is in costa rica Feb 17 2006 so I think you will have to wait until 2007.

Sorry for the bad news info from Cunard received today.

BAH HUMBUG!
I saw that in the paper too Edith - you werent imaging it! I had thought about going through to AKL too! Things have certainly changed securitywise since the good old days. Sad really because the youngsters that used to roam the wharves can no longer do so - how are they going to foster their love of ships?
Cheers

I agree Selwyn, However If anyone is in the Southampton area this Saturday they are doing guided tours of the whole site, and Arcadia, Legend of the seas and QE2 are all in, no you wont get on board but you will get up close.

You will need to book I think there are 4 trips 023 8048 8800 it is from May flower park

There was a string on this last week just before you joined, but I can not think who started it.

For more info, see QM2 thread in Cunard Forum.

The QM2 is generating huge crowds where ever she visits. The QE2 has always produced a lot of spectators. I think it is likely to be congested in Sydney when they both visit. I look forward to the photos

There are some details on www.cunard.com site. Both QE2 and QM2 are departing from Fort Lauderdale on 10 January 2007. QE2 is going through the Panama Canal then up the West Coast before crossing to Sydney. She then will go to SE Asia, South Africa and then back to Ft Lauderdale in 108 days.
QM2 is going around the world in 80 days, via Cape Horn, Sydney, the Gulf, Suez and the Mediterranean.

Stepped onboard QE2 in Hobart only to be met by very large Scottish security guard
who requested a pass. No pass.Walked off the ship with escort ( Capt. Warwick) on his way into Hobart for a walk.

Wharf area in Hobart during QE2 visits is completely closed off to public since Sept 11

A little bit of personal administrivia in relation to security; took a deep Caribbean cruise on QM2 16-26 November 04 out of NY City. When coming back on board in one of the ports down there I kept flunking the metal scanner exam. We finally found out what it was, the aluminum foil on a "single" piece of chewing gum! Now that is a sensitive scanner! Alan Hill Bridgeport, Pa. 19405

To the NZ members:

Maybe we should approach the Maritime Museum's of Wellington and Auckland to try and arrange a tour through QM2 with Cunard's assistance. What we can't achieve as individuals we may achieve as an official recognized bloc of ship enthusists?

Pardon Me Mates,
I feel the QM is an ugly ship look at the silhouette of the QE 2 and the QM, and you'll see what I mean. Once upon a time ships looked like ships, some cruise liners have nice lines but by and large they are just big floating boxes.Sorry my age is showing?

Having sailed on both I agree with you but that is the difference of nearly 40 years in design.

Also take a look at the basic design of the big carnival ships with QM2 ie take away the extra staterooms at the stern and hey presto QM2 appears.

The main difference is strength liner V cruise ship

Ngaio 62, you will need something like that to get on board, with the advent of our dear friends the Americans' knee jerk to security and ISPS on ships and ports, it alsmost impossible to get anywhere near a ship unless you have the requesit pass.

Saw the QM2 for the first time in Southampton last month - what a mammoth she is, but still an awesome ship!

Here are two pictures of her leaving Lisbon last Sunday. It wasn't the first time she ever called Lisbon, but it was the first time I get to photograph her. Hope you like it.

=]

I also have the opinion that she's not the most prettyest [??] thing floating, but her size catch everyone's looks... :P In cruise liners, I prefer the old style, design like QE2, Princess Danae or the good old Funchal, that sort of ships.

Cheers!

Sorry paul disagree with you. From my expereince he is a very quiet man, with a very dry sense of humour. I was on board at what may well have been fairly stressful times earlier this year, and i wouldnt say he ever showed signs of being grumpy!!

Wow, did she manage to fit under the bridge?
I remember hearing that as we sailed into Lisbon last year. I was wondering what the sound was, almost like a large bee until we were told about the bridge. (Thumb)

Hi Daniel,

Last time she was here, before this one [I belive it was last August] I was on top of that bridge [called Ponte 25 de Abril - April 25th Bridge, honoring the Revolution of '74] and it seemed like we could jump right onto the top deck, since it was so close... but it thought its was an ilusion or something like it... However, it is really close... A taller ship can't call Lisbon...

Hi Folks
Yes the QM2 is due in Aukland at 7.00am on the 17.02.07 departing 10.00pm
for Sydney on her World Maiden Cruise. My wife and I are flying from Scotland
to San Francisco, and boarding the QM2 05.0207 for Sydney with stop overs in Honolulu,Pago Pago,Aukland, Sydney,2 weeks in Sydney with our daughter and back to Scotland
We have cruised quite a bit QE2,Oriana,Arcadia,and Legend of the Seas.
I have some great photos if I could find time to post them,a visit to the bridge, at the Captains table on the QE2 with Captain Paul Wright on a transatlantic crossing
This Maiden voyage should be a bit different to my first one as a 16 year deck boy on the MV Broompark of J J Denholm which I joined in Greenock, Scotland 13.05.1959 paid off Hamburg 25.03.60.Ten months thirteen days
The first port of call was Guantanamo Bay,then Santiga, Cuba for a full cargo of bagged sugar for Tokyo.
Regards to all
