STANVAC PRETORIA was damaged by stranding on Zuidvachter Island 24/6/1962. Can any one tell me where Zuidvachter Island is.

been looking at
have you? Interesting as that is the only reference I have seen;
Not in my Gazetteers; Not even if you separate it into Zuid Vachter.
The Center (sic) for American History; University of Texas and Austin
has particulars of the ship in their Exxon Mobil collection.

Dutch vacht is to do with fur or pelt, I think.
Best Wishes, Raymond

Thanks Raymond I have drawn a blank as to where Zuidvachter Island is on all the sites. But some one may come up with the answer.

Zuid vachter does not sound Dutch although vacht means fur or skin indeed.
It could be more likely Zuidwachter island, (South watcher island) and which you find in Indonesia.
Being an ex Dutch colony, then there are still many old Dutch names around.

Looks like "Zuidvachter" is a misspelling. Should be "Zuidwachter" ( Dutch for South Guard or something similar).

Here are two possibilities:

Zuidwachter (1) now known as Pulau Peniki, just north of Jakarta (05.42S 106.42E).

Zuidwachter (2) now known as Pulau Pasoso, west of central Sulawesi (02.23N 119.37E).

I'd take a punt on number one myself.
