Pennant Numbers

I am trying to compile a list of Pennant Numbers for RN and Auxiliary vessels and have the following listed under Flag Superior W. From the names I assume that they were all, or the majority were, tugs. Can anyone add to the list? It would appear that, when a vessel was lost, the Pennant Number was allocated to a successor :-

Hope this helps

Are these all before 1947 since when all auxiliaries, whether RFA, YCS, PAS or RMAS seem to have have been under Flag Superior A, L or K?

Morning Lancastrian
Yes Pre-1947. I'm using my 'Warships of World War II' which fits in with jbryce's list of names and numbers.

Hi again JB

A further updated list - there are quite a number of tugs/salvage vessels listed but have no Pennant No shown against their names.
If I can be of any further assistance don't hesitate to ask.

As W125 is now Sea Giant do we have a pennant No for Mediator.

The listing I have shows W125 Sea Giant as the 508 ton 1920 built ex-USN Contocook that was requisitioned/accquired in 1940 and sold in May 1948. It also lists the Bustler Class tug Mediator as W125. Launched 21.6.1944 and sold 1968.
It also says some of the earlier tugs were transferred to the examination service and were also used on other duties - it looks likely therefore that the elderly Sea Giant lost her number when the Mediator entered service.

Many thanks for the additionals.
With pennant numbers, I can only assume that the numbers were realocated to a successor, and that no one number would be allocated to two different vessels at the same time. Consequently, it is possible to have two, or more, vessels with the same pennant number, but at different times.

Hi again jbryce
Glad this additonal info was useful. I am quite sure that numbers were, as you have said, simply re-allocated. I do, for example, have a photo of the ex-USN 'Sea Giant' photographed at Harwich and she looks a very elderly, well-used tug and would probably have been removed from towage duties by the time the 'Mediator' entered service.
Please don't hesitiate to contact me again if I can be of further assistance.
Kind regards

My copy of Lenton & Colledge 'Warships of World War II' has SEA GIANT (ex USN Contocook) 508grt/1920 requisitioned/bought 1940 and returned/sold 1946 with the P.No. W.193.

Hi Gil
I have been working off the same source and it does seem that the same Pennant numbers were used over and over again. I think you will agree the picture of the 'Sea Giant' does show here as getting rather long in the tooth.

That does appear to be the case.
