I was on the Maskeliya around late October 1960, we were alongside in Chittergong when a cyclone hit. We maintained watches and at times we were Full Ahead while tied up, Capt. Evans was on the bridge for about 12 hours. I was Fiver on the 4to8 manoeuvering like mad.
The Clan Alpine was on bouys but had her anchors out as well, the cyclone hit at amazing speed, and even with a full head of steam she was dragged by the storm surge inland. She finally came to rest about a mile from deep water in a paddy field.
The next day we all went out to look at her, it was amazing to see her stuck high and dry. Of course I didn't have a camera with me! However if anyone is interested there is picture at www. chesterahoy.com/SHIPS/f2.htm.
Fortunately I believe that all the crew were OK, I'd be interested to hear from anyone that was on her, I believe Andy Logan was 2nd Mate and has written of the incident in Sea Breezes.
