Taipei - A Panama-registered cargo ship sank in choppy waters off Taiwan's west coast Monday, leaving three crew members dead and 10 missing.

The Coast Guard Administration dispatched helicopters and speed boats to search for the Chinese crew. By midday Monday, it had rescued 12 crew, recovered the bodies of three and continued to search for the remaining 10.

The 16,834-ton bulk carrier Da Ji was transporting a load of gravel when it took on water and capsized about 20 nautical miles (37 kilometres) off Changhwa.

The ship is owned by Hong Kong's Ta Shen Shipping Co Ltd and often transports cargo between Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The rescued 10 crew are recovering at two hospitals in western Taiwan.
