Around 1,200 people were rescued by lifeboats in Ireland last year, according to figures released by the RNLI.

The organisation says it responded to 922 calls for assistance during 2007.

The busiest of Ireland's 43 RNLI stations was at Arranmore in Donegal, which launched its lifeboat 51 times.

The release of the statistics coincides with the RNLI's annual drive to raise funds so it can continue its work to save lives.
