Is this a legitimate fear, or just scaremongering? Comment from the fishing fraternity would be appreciated.

Unfortunately it's all too true. We may eventually find out when the vessel was last fumigated, if ever ?. Bad news for the birds on St Kilda I'm afraid. Hopefully the rats did not survive.

When the ex-Bibby liner Herefordshire was being towed to Glasgow for breaking up in 1934 she was wrecked on Cardigan Island, Dyfed in very bad weather. Rats escaped (must have been strong swimmers!) and decimated the Puffin colonies there. Apparently it was 50 years before Puffins began to re-colonise.

De-rat certs. on an ordinary merchant vessel are renewed 6 monthly. Fishing vessels ?? Is it even a requirement?

I'm not sure it is Geoff but on the UK owned and crewed boats it would be very very unusual for them to have rats onboard. Too big a risk of having an entire catch condemned as unfit for human consumption if the authorities found out that they had , or have , rats onboard. The Spinningdale although Fleetwood registered was owned and operated by a Spanish F.O.C. ( Flag Of Convenience ) operator and had recently been given a refit and repaint so should be clear of any rats hopefully.

It will be a concern until they can either find rats or not , the problem will be that its a fairly inaccessible Island in most of areas so traps might not find any rats but they could be there.
