Cruising With A Difference

3rd February 2008, 06:15
Japanese mourners could soon be attending funerals aboard a cremation ship as the country struggles with the challange of a rising death rate.
A consortium of funeral operaters could have such a vessel afloat by 2010 to help overcome a shortage of furnaces in a nation where almost all bodies are cremated
The idea is bing promoted by the Nippon Foundation,a private charity organisation which has hit upon the idea of rebuilding a car ferry into a cremation ship which could carry 20 vehicles and 400 people.
Mourners would go on board the ship for the funeral service and then be able to throw the ashes into the sea if they wished.

During the funeral and cremation service the ship will be cruising along the coast of Japan
