I have Photoshop Elements 2 on a CD. I find it invaluable for photos, etc but I have had to uninstall it because it takes over the format for all my documents, photos, etc. It insists on opening everything, which is a disaster.
Can someone please advise me how to install it and prevent this from happening?

It should ask you at some point if you want a standard or custom installation.
Ask for the custom installation and leave everything you want checked except the file types that you don't want it to open.
Failing that right click on a file and use open with the programme you want to use and make sure the box is ticked that says always use this to open this type of file.
Most installation programs give you the option of picking which file types you want it to open at some point during the process.

Another way is to open Windows file associations and re-set them to the
programme you prefer to use. You can then set this as a default.
An easy way to access this is to use the "open with" option on
