When the motor vessel HOLMDALE sailed from Lyttleton as the CELTIC KIWI on March 25th. 1991 it was almost 30 years since she had first arrived in New Zealand to begin a career that would outlast her running mates and many of their more modern successors. This smart little vessel with her grey hull and distinctive black topped green funnel was built for the Holm Shipping Company of Wellington to replace the HOLMGLEN which had foundered on November 24th 1959 en route from Oamaru to Wellington, with the loss of all fifteen crew.
