Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct forum... but I am looking for information about how to find crew lists for old ships. I have a photo of my great grandfather in his naval uniform. His hat says HMS Ophir. I think the photo was taken around 1911. Can I find out any more about his naval career? Also are there any lists that indicate where seamen were at the time of National census? Can anyone help?

Armed merchant cruiser Ophir in 1901. Commissioned at Tilbury by Commodore Winsloe for the Duke of Cornwall's visit to the colonies. She was torpedoed and sunk on 19th October 1917.
I would sat that this is your starting point.

Sinclair, a warm welcome to Ships Nostalgia.
Normally a thread such as yours would be appropriate in our research forum. As this is your first posting, I've taken the liberty of moving it to our "Say Hello" forum as it will receive a wider audience here.
