Hi folks,

I'm trying to get a list together of all surviving Ben Line seamen. I'm going to use Excel to poulate it and would be grateful if anyone who feels like it could let me know who sailed when and where, on what ship and what date.

Your cooperation wpuld be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a good idea (and a lot of work for someone?) and should help get many more people together etc and generate more discussion

Graham, the hardest work is setting up the spreadsheet and as I now work in computing, I'm willing to do it.

If anyone wants to be on the list, can you please PM me with your ships, dates, email addy and what you're doing now? I could also do a column for your town of residence.

Let me know, guys.

Hi Mike,

Iam not sure what side of the fence you are looking for people who belonged to Wiilie Tam Sings Navy.
You have mentioned Seaman ,do you literaly men seaman as on deck or all ranks and departments who sailed on Ben Boats.
I ahve no problem on giving my info if it helps stimulate more discussion betwen all of us .

We are of course missing out on many folks stries who were with ben but are not members of SN ,this we need to promote and presude those who have the means to get off the settee and get on line. get in the room where ever the pc is and start swinging the lamp. It all helps us keep young and out minds active what ever the story is.

Rgds Ian.

Hi Ian,

I mean seamen in the general term, not Seamen, i.e. ABs. Let's face it, we were all seamen!

I agree with you as regards the amount of Tam Sings Navy people online. If anybody knows an ex Benboat man, get 'em online now!

Hi eletel,

If you click on my name, you'll see a toggle to Send a Private Message (PM) to Celsis. If you can send me a PM with your ships, dates, email address for old shipmates to get in touch and where you live now, that would be brilliant!

Bob.
I was on "Bencleuch" at the time.We went on to the buoys in Port Said the morning the war broke out.As we had cargo for Port Said the authorities wouldn,t allow us to transit the canal. We stayed in Port Said.blacked out at night with an armed guard on board for half the war,3 days.Eventually we sailed from Port Said back through the Med,bunkered at Dakar then Durban.Water was rationed to a bucket per man per day before we arrived in Malaya 46 days later.

We arrived off Port Said 1956 the day Nasser blockaded the canal entrance, with sunken craft etc , I was Peggy on the Benmacdhui, and saw the French and British planes clearly strafing the entrance.
Next day orders came through to up anchor and back track through the "Meddy', bunkered at Dakar, then round Africa then up the Indian ocean to Penang, first port of discharge. a voyage of 43 days, boy it was good to set foot on land again.
Will have to dig my discharge book out and send in dates etc, A good idea to strengthen old Ben boat mens memories and rekindle nostalgia as the old web site has gone it seems.

Although not a Ben Liner my self I do appreciate your problem. My history is Union Castle and we have a web site where ex UC staff update their own details and also enter any historic information they may have.
Have a look and possibly you could contact Owen Keen the site owner to see if you could copy the site as we have found it very successful.
Another alternative maybe to use Google Docs, we use this for another method of keeping in touch.
Have a look at both.

Best of luck with your endeavours, I shall now leave you in peace.

Hi Mike,

Google have a docs program at http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en/options/
You could publish the list here for people to view once you have set up the format, perhaps it will encourage more people to send their information.

All you have to do is inform people of the WWW path to the document

Hope this helps

Regards

John

We use it at work to publish our internal phone directory and works well.
