register of births at sea

can anybody help me. am trying to follow the line of someone in my wifes family tree.
his name is john howe and he was born at sea in 1794. originally we had info that he was born on a ship at tengah sulawesi but the person who supplied this info has lost her source.
would there have been any records of this birth lodged with the church or other bodies, either abroad or in the u.k. on vessels return, that is assuming ship was british.

If you discover such a register, I would appreciate the information. I too have an ancestor that is listed on a Census return as having been ''Born at Sea. British Subject.''
