A long shot - a ship laid up in Greece, in the 1980's with funnel unchanged...

I was going out by launch to a tanker that we were re-activating in Eleusis Bay in 1987 or so and of course ship spotting amongst the rafted ships (the most notable denizen was the old "America" of US Lines, later the "Australis" of Chandris) and I remember spotting a very recognisable funnel, which on closer inspection was adorning a distinctly Holts-like ship. I said to myself "A-Class", but I suspect I was wrong about that.

Being rather sure that Ocean Transport and Trading would not have laid a ship up in Greece, I assumed that she must have been sold and the new owners had not bothered with painting the funnel.

Does anyone know what she was?

There were a couple of M class ships laid up in Greece at that time one was the Maron laid up in Piraeus the other was Menon laid up in Stylis.Maron was scrapped in April 1987. Memnon was scrapped in February 1988.

Thanks very much, Mike. She must have been the MARON.

And a search under that name turns up this picture, which is exactly what I remember seeing:

We were reactivating the VLCC ERISKAY at the time. I must try to find and scan a decent picture of her.

Sorry, Ken. My mistake. I meant the 'Australis' of Chandris, ex "America" of US Lines. This old lady:
