Death at sea: Naess Sovereign

28th April 2010, 10:13
On 16 Feb 1966 the Naess Sovereign paused at a spot off the north coast of Tunisia whilst the funeral of one of the Goanese crew took place. As junior R/O I had no part to play in the proceedings except to stand with the other officers in the centre of the deck as the body, wrapped in cloth and placed on a door I think, was very slowly lowered to the surface of the sea until the waves washed it off and it sank due to the weights added to the bag. I was struck by the dissimilarity between this method and that depicted in films, etc.
