Very many thanks for that information, I think the "PALANA" was almost lost, having run aground on the Great Barrier Reef Australia ?

Now reached my 'threescore years and ten' and the picture of PALANA (Cambridge) brings back fond memories of my first trip to sea as a 16 year old Deck Boy. Thanks for the picture,it's downloaded and framed. bjb

Palana was also famous for towing Fernmoor (Runcimans) 2,500 miles across Pacific from south of Rapa Island to Auckland,a trip of 21 days in September/ October 1948 for which her master Captain.F.R.Spur was awarded the Royal Society of Arts award for a deed of outstanding professional merit by a member of the merchant navy. Wonder if two Monrovian or Panamanian registered ships could do same these days!!

Our Staff Captain who was Ch/O of Palana at time of Fernmoor tow told me that Fernmoor was repaired & back to sea,but Palana remained in port quite sometime overhauling engines because of heavy heavy running during tow. KIWI
