Thought you RFA chaps would like to know that sadly the USN has sunk the USNS Saturn (ex RFA Stromness) as a gunfire and missile target during and exercise of the coast of North Carolina. From posts and comments on this site I'm aware the Ness class ships were held in high regard and their former crews seem to have many fond memories of them.

There are some very good pictures on the US Navy website of her final moments, not happy viewing it has to be said.

I loved this ship, we had her in Western Shiprepairers in Birkenhead for long refits, twice during the 1970's. I was the cranedriver at the drydock on both occasions. We worked seven days a week for months on end, often getting 30 hours overtime every week. Stromness paid for a family holiday in the Algarve and a car for the wife.
A couple of pics of her in the drydock .
