In Santos we had a security system in operation in case of attacks from shoreside,as vessels next to us had been robbed. All outer doors were locked and only one door on the maindeck was open. This was guarded by an AB who was in radio contact with the bridge.B.J. who was paranoid about fire.or so he told the old man,had the painter from the lifeboat coiled up on his cabin deck almost to the height of his bunk to enable him to escape should a fire break out.His intention being to throw the rope out of his port and slide down it to the main deck ,some four decks below. Can anyone imagine B.J.managing to get out of the bunk in the first place.in the middle of the night.then getting tangled up in the rope.
