Can any of you Palm Line Gentlemen identify the ship in the background, or at least the class. It is Lagos 1948, the man is my father who had just trooped out on RMS Almanzora on what must have been one of her last trips.

Best wishes,

John Tremelling

Hi John. Are you sure about the year as Palm Line only came into existance in 1949, after being the United Africa Company. Looks very much like Lokoja Palm. Best wishes, Alan Weekes

It looks like the ''Lokoja palm'', 'cueball44'.

With the squared of stern I would hazard a guess it was the "Ashanti Palm" or that series.
Think it was later that 1948 though

Thank you gentlemen. My father cerainly shipped out in 1948, but I have since learned from him that he actually landed from Almanzora at Takoradi, then travelled to road to Lagos. I have also myself only yesterday read that Palm Line only came into existance in 1949, thus the photograph is in all likelyhood later.

Thanks Cueball, I have seen it and it looks very similar? Was Ashanti Palm a sister?

Zarian built 1947 transferred to Palm Line 1949 renamed Lokoja Palm, Ashantian built in 1947 transferred to Palm Line 1949 renamed Ashanti Palm, 1962 broke adrift in Naples harbour during storm and wrecked on breakwater.'cueball44'

A similar ship was Lagos Palm (1) later renamed Oguta Palm to release
the name for a newbuilding..

Hi Stan, Didn't Lagos Palm (1) have a Jumbo at No2 Hatch? Lokoja Palm and Ashanti Palm did not have one. The photo does not appear to show a Jumbo.

I sailed on the Lokoja Palm as RO in early 1965. A memorable experience.

This is one I took whilst we were in Safi discharging. This would be December 1964.
