Fort Austin is going to Birkenhead for a refit. Her 2 year sojourn in no3 basin is over.
From QHM, tug Union Wrestler, (Belgian flag, built Belgium 2011, more dosh to foreigners), arrives tomorrow morning to take her in company with Svitzer Pembroke.

may be the weather en-route or lack of space at Birkenhead.

No shortage of space here in Birkenhead, empty drydock in Lairds.

There is a photo of UNION WRESTLER at Portsmouth posted today on the Tug Talk website by one of the crew of the other tug involved SVITZER PEMBROKE.

AIS currently shows Svitzer Pembroke and Union Wrestler due South of St Catherine's Lighthouse heading WSW at 5 knots. Presumably they are towing Fort Austin.

ETA Liverpool 07:00 31st May from a source aboard one of the tugs.

Destination Liverpool ? I think that should read Birkenhead if she is bound for Lairds, or is she going to join the Fort George ?

Well if they make the Mersey they can then decide if it's a right or left turn.

Perhaps someone with AIS access can check what that indicates. Below is what Marine Traffic.com is saying at 0815 today.

I think she will be heading for Birkenhead, as she is going for refit not scrapping.

It not unknown for vessels to show destination Liverpool when they mean Birkenhead. ETA 31st 07:00, that will be at the bar HW 11:00 (8.36mts)

Thank you for the info gents.

Sometimes Cammell Lairds put the RFAs in Liverpool for a while if there is no drydock available. They did it with Fort Victoria last year.
However the designated drydock for this ship, Laird's #5 dock is currently empty, so she may well go straight in, although one of the cranes at that dock is without a jib at the moment, so that may delay the drydocking.

Just watching the tow on AIS, they are just north of Anglesey.
The two tugs have just reversed their course from an easterly one to a westerly one.
Have they lost the tow?

Boatman25

No probably just biding their time

Mmm - according to AIS
The two tugs are about 2 mile apart
Union Wrestler is going at 1.5 knts
Svitzer Pembroke is doing 6.8 knts

Now we have Union Wrestler heading east
and Svitzer Pembroke heading west

Well, now they are still about 14 nm North of LLandudno, both heading due West at 9 Knots. Earlier the Union Wrestler was showing Zeebrugge eta June 3rd, but this has now reverted to Liverpool May 31.
Could it be that Fort Austin is at anchor and will be brought in by local tugs

As a dead tow she is unlikely to be at anchor as no power to haul up. The tugs anchor chain unlikely to be strong enough to hold both her and the tow.

Both tugs have now gone from AIS. Union Wrestler was last seen heading West at 9 knots about 10 nm NW of Point Lynas.

Apparently handed over at the Bar to SMIT SANDON on her head and SMIT BARBADOS stern and joined later by SMIT WATERLOO for docking.

Well they sneaked her in. I was driving over Duke St Bridge in Birkenhead when I spotted Fort Austin proceeding up the East Float as bold as brass.
I've posted a couple of photos of her in the gallery.

Smit Sandon & Barbados where out at the bar at 05:30 for the hand over, both Svitzer Pembroke & Union Wrestler both left the bar for home. Fort Austin locked in at 10:20 a very smooth operation, and has gone up to Ilchester Wharf (by the rowing club) where she is to spend some time before transferring to Lairds. I will post a photo in the Gallary for you. Thanks goes to a lairds worker for the info.
