MV Liemba on Lake Tanganyika

I spent several years of my early childhood playing on the decks of the Liemba in the 1950's. There was a tragic accident involving the chief engineer who died trying to jettison a sinking lighter during a storm. I have only vague memories of this and am having difficulty tracking the incident down on the net. Can anyone help?
