Findmypast.co.uk in conjunction with the National Archives have just published 1million Merchant Navy Seaman Records covering the period from 1918-1941. Included with name and rank are date and place of birth, some with descriptions and photos and next of kin addresses.
This is a pay site, but invaluable to those members searching for relatives who served between the wars.

Thanks tsell - I've now got my father, grandfather, and two great uncles. A word of warning to anyone who hasn't done this type of research before - if you are not already a subscriber to the website, the minimum 'pay-as-you-go' option of 6.95 gives only three searches, at 20 credits a time out of a total of 60 credits.
