Oranje and Windsor Castle

I sailed out as a passenger on the Oranje around 1974 and sailed back three years later on the Windsor Castle. Emigrated to South Africa, Capetown to work for Sal Weir. (Stewart and Lloyds and Weir Pumps). On the way out the Second Engineer was an Ex Weir man and was friendly with my new boss in Capetown. So my trip out was never sober and I was invited to all the Officers Parties. Great trip. Unfortunately I cannot remember any names. On the way back on the Windsor Castle the rot was setting in on the UK Merchant Navy and a few of the Pursers, etc. were being made redundant. I have a party invitation on Windsor Castle notepaper somewhere I will dig out and post sometime. Happy days, Ian

I think the seconds name was Jim Oakman, although I could be totally wrong!

I did my 'steam time' (X/2/E) on the Oranje September 1973 to August 1974
Jimmy Oakman was J/2/E on the 8-12 all that time (as I recollect),
Peter Hughes was S/2/E at first then Les Orde I cannot remember who the other J/2 was.

That is because none of the crew lists for the Oranje sailings from Sept 1973 to July 1974 are there.

Interesting. Were you a UC man for your full sea time (serve)?
