Hi,
I have just been looking at the International Signaling Flags on Wikipedia, and they have the H. Hotel,Pilot on board flag as a plain
oblong Red.Isn't it still red and white vertical halves?,I don't think I mis read it,in factwent back to have another look.

It's the website - there is no outline round the flag, so the hoist side of the flag is not visible against the white background.

H is white to the hoist and red to the fly, just as you remembered.

Quite a number of flag illustrations online have this deficiency.

When the flag "proportions" can be compared to others around it, the effect is clearer.

When the flag stands alone.............the problem begins.

Just for the sake of interest, Pilot boats and Pilot cutters only, fly the flag horizontally white over red.

And of course this is exactly the lights shown by such vessel at night... white over red.
