Magdapur's Finest 1965 Part 1

Attached are a selection of Magdapur's crew around 1965 that may be of interest. - I need help with a couple of names though.

Hi Jim,
I was fourth engineer on the UK coastal voyage that year, I also did the dry-docking at North Shields. Jake Donelly and Brian Gracie were on the ship the same time as me, I left prior to that voyage to India and joined the Rose of Lancaster, another company that Brocks managed. I ended up going down the west coast of Africa. After that trip I left Brocks and joined CP

Hi Geoff,
Brian Gracie was a good lad. I found Jake Donnelly as the type of Chief who let you get on with it with minimal interference - I did three trips with him.
I signed off Magdapur as Snr 4th Eng. at Tilbury on 24th Nov 1965 So I guess you probably relieved me. - small world.
I rejoined at Birkenhead on 12th Jan 1966 as Jnr 3rd Eng doing that trip plus the next coastal. While berthed in Railway Docks Middlesbrough in late June 1966. Magdapur was rammed in the stern by the cruiser HMS Tiger on a courtesy visit.
Damage to plating in way of the starboard side of the steering flat was not too severe but led to much "socialising" between us and some of Tiger's officers.

While berthed in Railway Docks Middlesbrough in late June 1966. Magdapur was rammed in the stern by the cruiser HMS Tiger on a courtesy visit.

The incident caused much amusement on the Pilot Service. The Pilot had piloted the ship into the dock. Once clear of the entrance the Captain said "My navigating officer will berth the ship. Come down Pilot for a drink and leave him to it. They did and the Navigating Officer hit the Magdapur. A few bottles of gin and a naval welding party closed the incident!!!

Thanks for this further info.
The collision occurred at very slow speed but obviously there was considerable kinetic energy involved - what was impressive was the way that the RN personnel remained impassively at stations as Tiger's (stowed) port anchor impacted with Magdapur's shell plating.
It was certainly very bold, or misguided as it turned out to expect "my navigating officer" to berth in such a confined space

I would have thought the Magdapur was virtually crash proof.... all those rivets, getting back to the original thread, I was onboard I think before you made that trip to India, I think it was Jake Donnelly's first trip Chief, the sailing second had joined the ship before I left, I think his name was Gerry Verrill, his parents owned a pub somewhere up on the north east coast called the Cod & Lobster. What ever happened to Brian Gracie anyway?

Hi Geoff,
The voyages I did on Magdapur were Jun to Oct 1964, Dec 64 to April 1965,
July to Nov 65, Jan to July 1966 - the latter included a coastal.
On the first voyage Alf Manley was C/Eng, John McKay 2nd Eng.
For the next three Jake Donnelly was C/Eng and Tony Dick 2nd Eng.
The coastal section had R. Whiteway as C/Eng. - cannot remember who the 2/E was.
Jake Donnelly and Tony Dick were friends from way back so that helped.
I found out some years ago that Tony had died - after Brocks he had been on container ships (ACL ?)

Re Brian Gracie - I was hoping you might know what happened to him.

When I saw your name I thought I might have known you but the "Geoff" i remembered was Geoff Turner Engineer Apprentice again I think on Magdapur but might have been Maidan - another good lad.

Hello Geoff,
There is a fishing village between Whitby and the Tees called Staithes; right on the harbour is a pub called the "Cod and Lobster" I'm pretty sure. Perhaps that was it.

Sailed with Gerry on the Marwarri, he was Jun 4th and I was 3rd. His parents did own The Cod and Lobster pub in Staithes and a couple of us stayed there a couple of nights. As there cards said "Close to the sea in good weather, to close in bad weather. Attached is a photo taken at Geoff Guest and his wife Audrey's wedding anniversary in Calcutta before he went ashore. Gerry at the top of the seatee, Audrey, Geoff, Derek Woolgar 2nd and his wife, the 5th and the Sen 4th cant remember their names. I beleive Geoff went on the Magdapur after this voyage.

The end result of all this socialising was that before sailing from Middlesbrough we had to get a relief master to replace our one who had taken ill - coincidence or what? This was the time of the Rhodesia problem and the Navy was engaged in a Beira Blockade some of the "socialising" got quite heated over this issue. I remember our master saying that the Navy had no right to act as they were doing and he would not stop if ordered to do so, - one of the Tiger's officers said that he would put a shot across his bow and if he still did not comply he would put a shot into his bow.
The Engineer Officer (a Commander E) was much more laid-back - he was fascinated by mini skirts which were newly in fashion (not for himself I may add.
Later that year HMS Tiger was the venue for a summit meeting between Rhodesia's Ian Smith and PM Harold Wilson
