Sorry, it’s in French.....so to summarise...

This is from the imagination of a French architect Jean-Phillipe Zopinni.... it’s a 9 hectare, floating, motorised island with its own port, lagoon, residential quarter, hotel complex and casino and is called the AZ island. This is not a new concept. Jules Verne floated (sorry) this idea in 1895! Great bloke, Jules.

I heard just today that serious design studies were now to be carried out by Alsthom. The architect hopes that it can be ready for the Shanghai World Fair in 2010.

It will have a 20 draught and 30 foot freeboard. 259,000 cubic meter displacement and a top speed of 10 knots. It also says that construction will be unitary – steel caissons - 270,000 of them – covered in a revolutionary anti-fouling preparation. Hope it really works! Imagine having to chip and scrape 5 hectares – underwater. The text says that this will be done by robots...Hmmm

If the idea catches on the sea will become one big floating suburb!...I wonder how they’re going to manage food, waste water, garbage from a complex like this .... in mid Atlantic. One damn big gash bucket or they’re going to need a whole host of supply vessels. Maybe that’s a saving grace...

I would hate to do SAR on that thing. It opens up a whole new can of worms!
