Ship Photos

I don't know about you guys, but when I read an article mentioning a ship by name I'm always keen to see an accompanying picture. But where to find one, that is always the problem. Yes, I know that I can search the SN Gallery and if I know the Company to which the ship belonged I can type this in on Google and often come up with the answer. But if neither of these work, what then?

Would it be possible for one of your clever guys to provide a list of the websites that they go to most often, so that the rest of us can save time trawling the net for possible sites?

I know the question of copyright has been discussed at length before. But can someone remind me about standard issue Company photos on postcards. Are these still copyright?

Thanks, Raymond, for the prompt response. I hope these addresses will be of use to other SN users - they will certainly keep me occupied for the next few hours! Cheers.

www.shipspotting.com is also good, although they are having problems because the database is so big, therefore you have to become a member

I have found photos of 90% of the ships in which I sailed, and those associated with my company, on the old favourite"Skyfotos" and it's associated site (see later).I'm sure we all recall the offers of prints from this company when they had recently rephotographed our ship from the air? This is now part of fotoflite.com, which has an even better database. Prints approx 6x4 from Skyfotos are a very reasonable 1.50 or so each.

For almost all ferries ad fast craft as well as most cruise ships tis site is brilliant:
http://www.faktaomfartyg.com/ (http://[url=%22http://www.faktaomfartyg.com/%22]http://www.faktaomfartyg.com/)
We call it the ferry spotters bible as it has everything in it. Yes it's in Swedish (I think) but you can work out where everthing is quite easily.

Till Reigster is an A-Z index of all the ships listed
Till Rederier is an A-Z index of all the companies which then takes you onto the ships in their fleet.

Hi John;

Is the 6x4 Inches? or mm? I have not see any photos from Skyphotos lower than L15 or so.

Would be interested to know.

Rory

I just received 8 prints, each 15x10cms (6x4 ins), for just over 12 inc p&p-- very good , fast service, excellent quality prints. I stress I have no connection to Skyfotos/fotoflite, but I can only applaud their good service-- though it must be said that I cannot find evidence of photos which I KNOW for sure existed of some ships, as I still have the originals which I bought in the 70s.

I have just been to the Fotoflite (ex skyfoto's) web site, I found a photo of one of the ships that I served on.
For one print 12 x 18 cm (4.5 x 7.5 inch) the price is 13.85, plus postage 4.50, plus VAT, that equals 21.56.

I don,t think that I will be getting a photo just yet!!!!!!

Hi Frank

I just checked back to those sites.

If you go to Skyfotos "World Ships Club", their standard price list is 1.25 per 6x4 print. Mine were all ordered from there, but came from foftoflite.com (the parent company). I have no idea why there is such a price discrepancy between these two sites

One quirk / wrinkle I have noticed-- Skyfotos thumbnails are all marked copyright with a "C" overlay, and cannot be printed/downloaded. HOWEVER,on fotoflite, if you find the thumbnail of the ship you are interested in, click that thumbnail, it opens up further detail and the ability to zoom in, click + on the zoom, and then right click and you can download that image to your PC-- no copyright overlays etc etc.

I hope this helps. Regards, John

Thanks for the info John,

I have just been to Skyfotos World Ships Club, and they do not have the ships photo that I am looking for, but the photo is there on the Fotoflite site.

You are right about the World Ships Club prices, it might be cheaper because there are less photo's to choose from?

Cheers Frank
