I was a Junior Engineer on British Gull 1971 in the Indian Ocean. We had a distress message from the steam turbine BP tanker pictured in the attachment, saying they had lost all power. Unfortunately I have
forgotten the name of the tanker. After much discussion, I guess with Britannic House, the Captain agreed to take the strikken tanker in tow.
The other Junior Engineer, and myself, were seconded to board the
vessel, and were lowered in one of our lifeboats with the Chief and some other crew. The deck officer(4th?) managed to lower one end of the lifeboat quicker than the other, and I recall (somewhat exaggerated perhaps) hanging onto the boat at some 45 degrees. Eventually we made the Ocean and headed across to the tanker. I remember being so low on the Ocean that we could see nothing around us at times and only flying fish sparkling across us.
After boarding we went down to the engine room, much different to the diesel rooms I was used to. The ship had lost all power, and when the engineers had tried to start the engine room auxilliary diesel, they found that one of the timing gears had stripped. The Chief returned the the Gull to try and effect a repair on the gear, leaving us Juniors to try and get the fo'castle donkey compressor working. This, too, showed signs of lack of maintenance. As I recall we found one of the big ends failed in this twin diesel. Checking the engineers stores we found brand new parts to effect a repair. I seem to remember working together all night to repair the engine. We fed on melting ice cream, as did the regular crew, who were detailed to bucket seawater to keep for flushing.
We had to return to the Gull next day, before we could test it, but we received a message that our work had resulted in their engineers
starting the engine, returning compressed air to the ship, and thus
reviving the dead ship. Eventually the tow was released, and both ships parted their ways. Some months later I received a bonus as a salvage payment, as the rest of our crew must have, on a sliding scale as I as I understood.
It was an experience which has lasted in my memory, with some
embelishments, for 40 years.
I would be grateful if someone out there could name the ship to complete my memory. I have posted two photos on Gallery, and attached one of them with this post.

Hi my name is Nick Ryan, I have joined in an attempt to get information about the Booth Shipping line. I have been re-searching my great great grandfather, James John Baker, but information is sketchy and solid at times.

I have his Ordinary Examination Paper dated 1889 Cert. # 20783 and his First Class Engineers paper dated 1889, also a letter of retirement after 32 years and the position of Commodore Chief dated 1921.

Here is my dilemma, I have him torpedoed of the coast of Nantucket in September 1918 on the SS Diomed ? also torpedoed of the coast of N Ireland whilst on the Murmansk run in 1919 ?

Is there any way I can find out what ships he served on and when? Lots of family mystery surround him, he was on the first steamship up the Amazon and in 1964 I remember getting about 20 display cabinets in various poor condition with lots of strange insects from the Amazon, does anyone know which ships were up the Amazon?

Any information will be greatly received. Thank You

Regards, Nick

Good day, everyone. I recently joined this site and am wondering if members can provide me with information on the air draft of cruise ships, and, possibly, restrictions by cruise lines of additional height clearances required for passing under bridges. I live in the Baltimore, MD (USA) region and often cruise from the Port of Baltimore. We have two bridges ships must pass under to reach our port - The Chesapeake Bay Bridges (186' or 56.7m) and the Baltimore Key Bridge (185' or 56.4m). The Carnival Pride (air draft 172.2') and Royal Caribbean Grandeur of the Seas (170.5') serve us, and when these ships retire from service, very few new ships have the clearance to pass under our bridges. Royal Caribbean Radiance-class ships (est air draft 172.3') should be able to come to our port, but Royal Caribbean says they do not have the height clearance. That tells me additional factors (antennas) may be involved. So, I am looking to document various air draft statistics on current cruise ships to see which ships can pass under our 185' bridges. Thank you in advance for any information available on this forum.

Soviet steamer EVEROLANDA, later named JANIS RAINIS

In July 1941, the Soviet steamer EVEROLANDA (built 1908, 3390 tons gross) was badly damaged by mine when serving as a military transport in the Baltic. She was towed to Leningrad, waterlogged, and spent over a year in Neva Bay. In November 1942, she was recovered and then repaired. After the Second World War she was renamed JANIS (YANIS) RAINIS and continued in service until 1969, when she was broken up at Tallinn.
When she was built at Hoboken, Belgium, she was fitted with a triple expansion steam engine made by North Eastern Marine Engineering Co, and according to the vessel entries in the Register Book of Lloyd's Register of Shipping, she retained this machinery postwar. However, in the Register Book of 1969 (the year in which she was scrapped), she is shown as having a new engine fitted in 1942 and the dimensions of the cylinders and the horsepower (2500ihp) match the engines that were fitted to Liberty ships. The Register Book entry also shows that the engine fitted in 1942 was of US manufacture, but there is no indication of the identity of the engine maker.
The Soviet Ship Register of 1964-65 shows that the vessel had a new engine, made in 1942, but no indication of when it was fitted, and it further indicates that JANIS RAINIS had new boilers fitted in 1952.
At first I was tempted to think that the 1969 Register Book entry was an error, but there seems little doubt that the vessel had a new engine, or maybe an old engine newly fitted. The data that were shown in the 1969 Lloyd's Register book were undoubtedly taken from the Soviet Register. It could have been salvaged from a marine hazard or war CTL or maybe purchased from Italy, where several Liberties were converted from triple expansion steam to diesel in the late 40s and early 50s.
I would be interested to hear from any member of this forum who can throw any light on this.
Regards
Roger Jordan
