Thank you for your comments, my feelings are similar to your own. I hadn't realised that the American Merchant Service hadn't been honoured similarily to our own Merchant Navy. I wonder how many of the fortunate people who are alive today appreciate those who served and died during the war at sea. regards Edgar

Looks like a 'dreich' Scottish day. When was this taken? What must once have been a thriving little harbour was a sad repository of rusting hulks for a while - and maybe still is for I haven't been there lately.

"Golden Eagle"'s regular service was London/Greenwich-Margate-Ramsgate, so she did poke her nose out to sea! In WW1 served as cross channel troop transport; 20s/30s also used on London Docks cruises. In WW2 used to evacuate Londoners to E Coast; Dunkirk 1940, 3 trips rescuing 1750. Served as A/A vessel till 1945. After WW2 did London-Southend-Clacton runs 1947-1949 her last season.

Hi Bruce, I was agent for all tankers that delivered oil into the Hamilton Dock tanks owned by East Coast Oil Wharfes Ltd. between 1968/1970 when I worked ashore for Colne Fishing Co.which owned this company. They handled marine diesel and supplied about 3/4 of the total Lowestoft trawling fleet. They would average between 4-5 tankers per month.I do remember dealing with the Chartsman and Guidesman. The local pilots would not move these vessels from the Hamilton Dock in darkness because of the poor quayside lighting,so quite often ships would get an unexpected night in if discharging was not completed.Steersman would have visited Lowestoft in 1968,probably just before being sold to Belgium for scrapping-although according to WSS book on Rowbothams demolition did not commence until 29.8.1969.Bill Murray's daughters actually lived in the next road to where I was living then.Don't know of any connection with the captain you mentioned and Craskes Ltd.but they were an old established local firm. The "Lady of the Lake"is still standing and thriving! Kindest regards Bob
