Taken in 1967. I visited Opua in 2007, and it is now full of up-market houses and yachts. Still a beautiful part of the world.

I believe that she was crewed by all the apprentices but did she also carry a Bosun, Chippy & any watchkeeping AB's?

That's the first photo I have ever seen of a ship in Opua. It wasn't until I checked the map that I knew exactly where it was not being an expert on the NZ coast.

Otaio carried 40 deck cadets and 30 engineer cadets. Her hull was the same dimensions as the Otaki/Essex but with a long bridge deck to accommodate the classrooms and workshops. She carried teachers and even a PTI instructor. This picture reminds me of why I never had the urge to leave NZS. Otaio was sold in 1976 and became the Eastern Academy under the Liberian flag and continued as a cadet ship until broken up at Gadani beach in 1982.

But Otaio had two lovely Doxfords and not Sulzers as in Essex and Otaki.

I've just posted a pic of Opua wharf taken in January 2007. It's a bit different now.

When she was in Wellington1961 dropping a life the falls broke leaving it held by one end only. I was on the Port Montreal in the next berth

Gentlemen, thank you for enlightening me and particular thanks to Steve Woodward. Despite the many, many hours I spend on here some things obviously slip through the net!
