Smile Shaw Savill Society NZ Branch

The next National Reunion of the Shaw Savill Society NZ Branch will be held in Picton in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, South Island NZ in April 2012 ~ !

If any former crew, officers or passengers sailed with Shaw Savill ~ who are not already members of the Society in either UK or NZ ~ and would like to join this memorable reunion in NZ ~ please contact me here ~ my contact details are on my profile.

Picton is home to the 1853 built barque Edwin Fox which sailed for Shaw Savill 1873-1884. The vessel has been preserved on Picton waterfront and the Museum and ship are well worth a visit.
The Edwin Fox Society would be extremely grateful for any bequests given to help with the preservation of the ship. She is the only wooden boat depicting our heritage that we have in New Zealand and indeed is the last one of her kind left in the world. She is a Category 1 with the Historic Places Trust.

Another memorable event in 2012 is the centenary of the sinking of the White Star liner Titanic on 14th April 1912 ~ . All over the world this historic event will remembered as the worst maritime disaster in peacetime history ~ and here in NZ ~ we will remember this disaster.

Our reunion will take place just two weeks later ~ and we will welcome any new members to our weekend in Picton, South Island NZ.

Jamie my friend, I can just picture the reunion!
Picton is a good place for the venue and I wish you and all the other Society members a memorable time. About time you made a 'pilgrimage" to Taranaki to see us!

Perhaps when I finish in Canterbury (2012?) we can have a wee reunion and a dram or twa?

Our Reunion this year was in New Plymouth Anzac weekend ~ emailed u the dates ~ but never heard, ~ so assume you out of town!
We had Reunion in Picton 18 years ago which was memorable occasion and probably the best of all our reunions ~ so I am sure the next one will be just as good or better ~ our hosts in Picton will ensure its the very best.

Reunion

First the sad news. I heard last month that Maurice Brew has passed away. Through this site I was able to put him touch with his old Wairangi shipmate Pete Vowles. Pete speaks very highly of Maurice.

I visited Edwin Fox a couple of years ago on my only return to NZ this century, lovely people. Cruise called on Sunday and we had civic welcome to Holland America's Statendam. I donated my SSA cap badge to EF together with a copy of Coptic's articles, which I borrowed before going up for my Second Mates. Also in Picton is a now land based coastal sailing vessel, Echo from memory. During my apprenticeship I had visited 10 NZ ports but this was my first call to Picton, stunning location.
I wish I could join you and hope a good time is had by all
John Clark

Thanks John ~ I just read about Maurice in the UK newsletter which just arrived last week after Christmas. Glad you managed to see EF at Picton - its a great wee museum. Pity you did not contact me before arriving Auckland ~ or even Picton on Statendam as one of our members is tugmaster at Picton and probably secured you alongside! Picton is ideal location for Reunion as most members come from the North Island and "savour" the trip across the Cook Strait and through the magnificent Marlborough Sounds. When I went to Picton last year to check venues for the reunion ~ we had force 10 on the way back to Wellington and most passengers were sick ~ I enjoyed the thrill of being on the high seas! Nostalgic moments of being back at sea.
Pity you cannot be with us in April~ cheers Jamie
