Former 'Exxon Valdez' For Scrap

Despite a number of name changes and a rebuild in to an ore carrier, her former name will live on after her end.

I always kinda felt bad for the Exxon Valdez. It wasn't the ship's fault that the accident happened. After all, ships don't run themselves aground, it takes human crew to do that.

I'll add something to this- A song dedication to the Late Exxon Valdaz:

How Could That Happen

Very shortly after the Exxon Valdez grounded in Prince William Sound I found myself at the Seamans Church Institute in New York assessing its radar navigation simulator. At the end of the day the instructional staff left our team alone on the system so we could get a real feel for the system. Our exercise area was Prince William Sound and, if I can recall correctly, our model vessel was a medium sized tanker.

After our exercises we still couldn't fathom how that disaster was ever allowed to happen given the navigation information that was available throughout the watch. Exxon walked away from the mess with a mere slap on the wrist having paid a pittance in compensation for the havoc and misery its vessel caused.

Still around - although (unsurprisingly) not at sea http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Hazelwood
