U.S. Navy In The Early Years
Between the end of the War of 1812 and the beginning of the Civil War, the Unites States underwent remarkable growth. U.S. Territory increased from 1.8 to 3 million square miles; U.S. population rose from 8.5 to 31.5 million; and the value of U.S. exports escalated from 82 million to 400 million dollars. During the same era, the United States Navy expanded modestly, while maturing into an organization capable of serving the needs of a dynamic and ambitious people. President Andrew Jackson lauded the Navy for the way it represented America’s glory abroad in peaceful and warlike pursuits alike, when, in his first inaugural address on 4 March 1829 he spoke with poetic cadence of “our Navy, whose flag has displayed in distant climes our skill in navigation and our dame in arms.”
