Identification of a ship by livery

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can identify this liner/passenger ship for me, or the shipping line. The watercolour is dated 1930 and the bow of the ship looks akin to WWI era, as we have previously had WWI ships in our paintings and they had similar bows.

I do try to be accurate in describing ships, so would be most grateful for any help anyone can give me.

Both the design of the ship and the black, red and white funnel, look like one of Nelson Line's class of Highland Brae, Corrie, Glen, Laddie, Piper, Pride, Rover, Scott or Warrior in my opinion. The only difference seems to be that the artist subbed in a blue band for the central black one.

Compare to the image here: http://www.timetableimages.com/marit...es/nels24a.jpg

Thank you both very much. I had found the Nelson line, but was thrown by the blue band. I think you are probably right, though why he should use blue instead of black, I don't know.

Suggestion -
Maybe the artist's source material was a black & white photograph(s)

The band between the white, by optical illusion, would appear to be a lighter shade and he guessed at blue.

Or, if the source material was a lithograph print of a previous artist's work the 'highlight' might have come across with a blue overprint.

Yes, I have seen a couple of pictures and the band does look lighter than the black top. Having had a good trawl through the Nelson Line ships, I think it must be Highland Rover, as it appears to be the only one with the partially enclosed promenade deck that was still operational in the Nelson colours in 1930, as Pride was sunk in 1929.

Take your pick.
CORRIE, LADDIE, GLEN, ROVER, SCOT, WARRIOR

All same class.

Stephen

PS Do you need photos of either?

Lovely old poster, I think about 1905 - 1910, have you a date?

Many thanks.

Hello,

Actually it's a watercolour that we have recent acquired and reframed and it is dated 1930. We think it is Highland Rover.

You're welcome.

Hello Catwoman

Here you go... a few of the ROVER. Good photos too!

Not my collection, but I don't think anyone will mind.

Stephen
