Trident Tankers
Hi everyone.
I served as a deck cadet and then 3rd mate with Trident Tankers and later P&O Bulk Shipping Division from 1969 to 1976. I attended Warsash from Sept 1969 till June 1970 and then City of London Polytech School of Nav at Tower Hill. I served aboard the SS Megna, SS Ardtaraig, SS Ardvar, SS Busiris, MV Atherstone and the MV Buccleuch. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me or served with me . Reguards Hugh Taylor |

Hugh,
On behalf of the SN Moderating Team, a warm welcome aboard from the Isle of Anglesey - we guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy the SN experience! You will certainly spark many happy memories when you have a chance to explore our threads and, who knows, you may even re-establish contact with old shipmates. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, I had left P&O by then but was on Ardvar from March 1971 - August 1971. Would be interested to hear how long you served with Trident Tankers/bulk shipping and what other ships you served on. Regards Hugh

Hi Hugh
Really just another welcome. I was with P&O before Trident Tankers was brought together from all the existing tankers in the P&O Group. I joined Trident when the P&O Malwa (where I was already 3/O) transferred to become Trident's Malwa. And then in April 1964 joined NZS's Lincoln as 2/O when she was transferred to Trident. I left at the end of that year to get my Master's but in fact never returned to sea. In those early days all the officers, Deck, Engineer and Radio were from one P&O Group company or another. We had P&O, B.I., NZS and Nourse on Lincoln subsequently Trident had to recruit from outside the group. There was often no great urge to sail in oil tankers or bulk carriers from the established cargo ship/ Passenger ship community. As the number of those ships diminished most people chose alternative careers, as I did. Ian |

I was on the Ardmay 1977. Lovely run for a tanker! St Croix, US Virgin Isles to eastern seaboard of USA. Then on Ardvar later on that year. As another poster said there seemed to be (even amongst the group of cadets I was with) an anti-tanker thing going on. I, on the other hand, really enjoyed them, the trip on Ardmay especially.
