Ahoy Steve,
Yep, seen those engineers doing that before, wearing coats, in that very strong winter 1962-1963[Baltic sea], it was really cold, high noon temps of -30*.Indeed a good looking vessel, thanks for sharing these.

Hello Ruud
According to my info there were nine 18,000 DWT Eagle Oil tankers transferred to Shell. Some were of the 'H' class design, and some like the 'San Ernesto' were of the 'A' class.
From what I can gather with my limited research the Eagle tankers were -
Edmundo/Emiliano/Ernesto/Fabian/Felipe/Fernando/Florentino/Fortunato and Patricio. I have eliminated the Emiliano/Fernando and Florentino as 'H' class and was wondering if you had info on the others.
Cheers

Thanks Steve - just spent some time at Helderline and discovered the 'Alinda' was the only one of the 'A' class. By the way in all your research you haven't come across anyone who has access to plans of the 'A' class ships of the 1959 vintage or the 'N' class of the early 1940's ??
Unfortunately trying to deal with National Maritime Museum/Tyne and Wear Archives/Glasgow University Archives on a long distance basis is heavy going.
Cheers

I would like to contact people who were on these ships
San Fortunato 30th December 1958 to the 24th March 1959
San Wilfrido 14th April 1959 – 25th May 1959
San Eliseo 24th June 1959 to 23rd December 1959
San Gaspar 29th April 1960 – 8th June 1960 and 9th June 1960
to 30th September 1960

I wondered if anyone here could help.

I have noticed you have only posted twice on site since joining and both concerning fellow mariners who have sailed with two different oil companies. Could you declare your interest on these postings is it for finding old ship mates or more on the legal side.

I'm sorry I've only just seen the questions addressed to me. My job is internet researcher. Sometimes I am asked to help people who have worked for shipping companies who are searching out old shipmates. Sometimes it is for legal proceedings they are contemplating. They are usually suffering from asbestos related injury. Is this not permitted on these boards?

Shell Tanker Alinda

Fm Lucy Knight (ex Shell R/O)
I wasn't on the Alinda when she caught fire, but l joined at the end of her dry dock where she had been for 3 months near Athens (1976) being repaired. I think she was laid up for a month in Germany before that. All l the aft accomodation had been destroyed and repaired and the radio room midships had been used as the engineers changing room. The c/e was none too pleased when l took it over amending the ALRS and trying to clean it up. He told me it was the engineers changing room and l should be out sunbathing on the bridge. None of the gear had been switched on for months and their was no power available untill the sea trials in evening in the dark and it turned out to be only two phases reaching the radio room and bridge so the radars wouln't switch from standby to on.

Several of the officers had been there when the fire broke out. Bruce the purser, the chief officer. I think his name was Wilson. Both of the 4/es. I expect you know about the Shell Helemund site. The is a list of some of the people who sailed on the Alinda and l recognized the name of the 3/E l paid off with in Panama. I can't remember if he had been on when the fire broke out.

Knackered ex Chief

Charlie....long time since we last met & I only live just down the road from you!
I was 2/Eng on Alinda before, during & in Hamburg for the six weeks following the fire in Feb 1976....long time since we last sailed together on the Naticina....another fine ship but marred by a different incident this time in Lyme Bay with the Berge Duke. The Chief on Alinda was of course Coineach MacLeod from Lewis; the Old Man Albert Mario Tennant out of Dublin; Harry Tate was ? Parsons out of the Mersey later to become a Manchester Ship canal Pilot & who I believe may have contributed one of the photos of Alinda in the Gallery ? It certainly was a testing time.

The chief steward who was on at the time of the fire (and lost his chief cook) was called Bruce (think his surname may have been Wyatt) He was also there in Scaramanga and sailed when the ship finished the 3 month drydock having had the aft accomodation rebuilt. I think his surname may have been Wyatt. The chief officer then who I had been on in Hamburg was there. There were several who had returned to the ship and sailed on her next trip who had been on her in Hamburg and then new ones like myself and 3/E B.Sayers, 2/O Alex who joined near the end of drydock. 3/O had just taken his 2nd mates in Plymouth. Think one of the 4/E was called Hugh who may have been on in Hamburg. The same chief eng you mentioned was on her when I joined at the end of dry dock and sailed on the next trip. He didn't like woman at sea and made my life hell.
