DALEBY 3628 tons Built 1900

" Another victim of that terrible month of April 1917 was DALEBY. Under command of Captain Charles Hord, she left Huelva 5th April bound for Garston with a cargo of ore(copper and silver) when she was torpedoed without warning off the coast of Ireland. Apparently she went down immediately taking her Captain and all but two of her crew with her. One of the survivors, Gunner Wilson, swam about for about two hours before he eventually found one of the ships boats and managed to scramble into it. He then searched among the wreckage strewn across the water and found another survivor, Fireman Davies, but no one else. They were both picked up eventually by a steamer which landed them at Avonmouth."

HMS President III was a London? shore establishment which I believe, handled the accounts of Royal Naval seamen who were working onboard Merchant ships during WW1/2.

The CWGC website lists Richard Miles as being in RNVR.....

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=3053249

....it's possible that you might be able to get a copy of his Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve service record from the National Archives at Kew in London. This would list the shore establishment that he was attached to, but also the ship he was serving on at the time.ie DALEBY. I don't know much about Royal Naval records but there is a research guide here....

From "The Ropner Fleet" by Leonard Gray published by World Ship Society(small paperback with 50 pages).....

DALEBY 1900 - 1917
Official Number 112419
3628 Gross tons
330 x 46.6 x 24.4 feet
June 1900 Completed by Ropner & Son.
29.4.1917 Torpeoed and sunk by submarine 180 miles from the Fastnet with the loss of 25 crew including the Master.

There is also a small photo of the DALEBY.

Using the Official Number 112419, the Agreement and crew list for the DALEBY is available for 1917 from the National Archives.....

http://tinyurl.com/35s7ay

but I'm really not sure that Richard Miles would be listed as he was RNVR and not part of the actual ships crew. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will be able to confirm.

Would it be that as he was RNVR he was assigned to HMS President as his 'RN Ship' but was serving aboard the Daleby.

When my brother, RN was between ships his ship was HMS Victory, sounds a bit Irish that however that was the fact. When Lt Cmdr David Fraser was awaiting the Board of Inquiry into the loss of HMS Oswald his ship was also ... HMS Victory.
