SD 14 - Liberty Ship Replacement

I was rooting through my files and came upon a monograph from 1976 by John Lingwood on the concept, design and production of SD 14 cargo vessels. These were designed in the 1960's to replace the aging WW II tonnage which was soon to go out of service. I guess these could have been one of the last success stories in British shipbuilding (Please no brickbats!). Does anyone have any views on the success (or not) of the design ? It seems from Lingwood's little book that a large number were built.

The SD- 14 was a great workhorse, but as so often with British ideas too late. I sailed on the Dunelmia, the last with a conventional engine room. Great ship but even when new she was past her sell-by date. Its a shame but it was the same with the motercycle industry, the car industry and our engine builders. Even we the British seafareers were to slow to change. Just a shame but the way of the world.

John, that didn't just happen to the British. many were caught by the rapid changes, i.e. containers and bulkers versus regular geared cargo vessels.
Hapag was still building fast cargo liners only to sell them a few years later, Half the Dutch coaster fleet went up for sale within a few years in the early 70's...
Similar things happened to other industries in a variety of countries.

Surely,Wee John, the British seafarer can't be held responsible for the design of ships out of a Sunderland Shipyard! Most British Seamen in 60's were quite capable of working any vessel assigned them.Maybe the problem was that their advice was never sought when ships were being designed!!!

I agree that in the 60's and early 70's the British seafarers, the companies and shipbuilders were good and I was proud to be a part of that, but we felt so superior to F.O.C ships, foreign crews and foreign shipbuilders we became compalacent.
As with the SD-14, cargo handling and ship practices were changing and the world was not going to pay a premium price for "British".
The SD-14 I sailed on was one of the best, well designed, well maintianed and run by a company that cared, but could not compete in a changing world.
If I could, I would turn the clock back and do my last few years on SD-14s but sadly those days have long gone.

There is a large book available covering the history of these ships. It covers in detail each of the SD 14's from building to dimise. It also has a lot of excellant colour photographs inside. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in these ships. I think it was John Lingwood who wrote this book, but I will have to check at home. As someone has already mentioned, there were a large number of these ships built.

Hawkeye,

I'll be very interested if you, or another member can find the details of this book on SD-14's.

I took two of this type out from Austin & Pickersgill, the first being Strathdare, which was sold to Ellerman's five days after leaving the UK on our maiden voyage. Five months later, we handed her over in Antwerp where she became the City of Exeter. I then had Strahdoon for a year. Both and the other three sisters had modified (improved) accommodation, and Velle cranes fitted at all hatches other than No.5. I found them to be very "stiff" ships, even when loaded with a general cargo ex-UK

Reading some of the other replies to this thread, I think you may have enough details of the book. It would take me about two weeks to have replied, as the book is at home and I'm not.
I got mine from the Ian Allan bookshop in London, (Waterloo). The shipping magazines have adverts from this company (& others) regarding buying their books.
Hope you enjoy it.

There appear to be two books about SD14s by John Lingwood

"SD14 (The Great British Shipbuilding Success Story)" ISBN 0950004480. Published by the World Ship Society in 1976.

"SD14 The Full Story" Published by Ships in Focus in 2004.

There are two of each on Abebooks but none of them are terribly cheap I'm afraid.

Cheers

..... "SD14 The Full Story" Published by Ships in Focus in 2004.
This book was given a substantial update, with pics, in a recent issue of Ships in Focus Record - I can't remember which one, but if I remember I'll take a look tonight and post the issue number tomorrow.

Marconi Radio Officer mv. "Collin"/GOMF.

I joined the m.v. Collin/GOMF at South Shields. The Marconi gear was a consul fitting -- excellent gear. The Radar was so/so but we survived. I recall meeting the sister ship m.v Carrel/GOME in heavy weather in the N.Atlantic. We were both heading Baltimore/Philadelphia area from UK. We observed her take heavy seas and bulkhead bust in --- a wet bar room!. Later, on our way Duluth to Belfast, grain cargo, we were hit by force 11 gales and huge seas -- we lost all vents etc. but we got home safe although it was 10 days with little rest or sleep. The owners were Jardine Matheson of Hong Kong.Crew were from China and were excellent.

The "Collin" went to Greek owners in 1976. She was originally launched on 5th. May 1970.

I enjoyed my time on this ship. 73's & Slainte. Colman

if any of you gents are interested, there was a card model kit of the SD14 manufactured a number of years ago by a company who sold it in 3 sections, of bow, centre and stern sections. they were of the full section ship, intended for going on the water under radio control, and where built as they would have been in the shipyard, with all internal bulkheads, spacers, double bottoms, etc, and when joined together made a full model with superstructure of approximately 80 inches long. She was a real work of art, and could actually be made on the kitchen table as the only tool needed was a sharp craft knife, steel rule and paper/card glue. They are still produced to this day by a company called Marcle Models( MB4), Finch Lane, Amersham ,Bucks, tel 01494 765910, web site www.marcle.co.uk I say now, I am nothing to do with this company , and am just passing on info.cheers.just checked on their web site, and the model is actually cheeper now than it was 21 years ago?and a picture of a finished sd14 is on the page site as well. very good value.

Sd15

Was surprised to see that the SD15 came about so early in the life of the SD14 fleet.

ARMADALE 1970 SD15 A&P 866 7022447

From memory the SD15 was a lengthened version of the original and for some reason I assumed that it was a late development, rather than being in almost at the beginning.

Still learning!

London & Overseas Freighters were major shareholders in Austin & Pickersgill and, I believe, prior to nationalisation of shipbuilding, owned the company outright. They had four SD14s - London Fusilier, London Grenadier, London Cavalier and London Bombardier.

They also had three A & P B26s, the bulk carrier standard design: London Earl, London Baron and London Viscount.

The vessels built on the Tees were built by British Shipbuilders at the old Smiths Docks Yard which they took over around 1977, the "Islands" as they were known were SD KING 15's the names were "West, South, East and North Islands" all powered by Sulzer 5cy. The "North Island" was wrecked off Chile in 1997, the others remain in service 0/8 with Foreign owners which is amazing bearing in mind the old Smith Dock Company (pre 1977) were building Container Vessels before British Shipbuilders took over and built this class of vessel, as we all know there are Ports in this World where a Container Ship is not much use unless you have a floating crane which is why even today these ships live on. The story of British Shipowners getting rid of tonnage which they felt they could not run of course is not new it happened 40/50yrs ago when the Greeks managed to run ex British tonnage for many years and being steam were a source of employment for myself and a British Master who were normally the only Brit's aboard.

They were built for Cuba. The Cubans wanted more, to be built at Smiths on the Tees.
British Shipbuilders, in their wisdom, said, "No, you can have them built on the Wear".
The Cubans said that they were very happy with their ships from Smiths and that was where they wanted them built.
British Shipbuilders, in their wisdom, said, "No, you can have them built on the Wear".
The Cubans said, we want them built at Smiths or we'll go elsewhere; Germany, for example.
British Shipbuilders, in their wisdom, said, "No, you can have them built on the Wear".
So the Cubans went to Germany.
British management at its best.

Armadale (Ron Stringer, Oct. 8th) was the only SD14 with a Doxford engine.
Hi, I was expressing my surprise that the Armadale, which was quite early in the series, is described (in the list that was posted) as an SD15, not an SD14. I always thought that the SD14, a lengthened version of the SD14, was developed later in the life of the design, to meet the requirements of owners that wanted greater capacity than could be provided by the original. Now you describe her as an SD14 - what is a poor sparks to make of that?

Chouan, I thought the failure to secure the rest of the order was due to the Government of the time not being prepared to cover/finance /guarantee? the rest of the order if things went wrong as Smiths was then owned by British Shipbuilders and they were wanting to shut/sell the place to reduce the shipbuilding capability in the North East which as we know was the eventual aim.

That may have been the agenda, but the Cubans wanted more building, and they wanted them built at Smiths. British Shipbuilders, in their wisdom, said, "No, you can have them built on the Wear". As above .....
Clearly, shutting down the building at Smiths was the priority, and the management of British Shipbuilders put that above getting an order for ships, which they'd rather went to Germany than upset their plans. As it was, the yards on the Wear closed not very long afterwards.
Some of the people at Smiths moved to Devon to work at Appledore, on British Shipbuilders recommendation, whch was a big mistake, as they were made redundant a couple of years later, on a significantly reduced redundancy payout, with no prospect of work in the area, and isolated from friends and family.

An engine room manned 24/7 on a conventional 4 on 8 off watchkeeping regime (with possibly engines controlled from the engine room) rather than one operating in the periodically unattended mode (UMS) with bridge control of the engines.

Am I mistaken or was there only one SD 15 built?
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the SD 14 was mainly designed for companies that operated in small, out of the way places that did not have sophisticated cargo handling facilities.
True?
A happy New Year to all.

Yes, you are correct. She was called "Armadale". Details:

10,328 tons, 15050 dwt. Lb; 160.1x 21.4 metres. Single screw diesel engine making 16.5 knots. Built by Austin & Pickersgill Ltd, Southwick. Type SD15. 1981 sold to Odissea Shipping Co., Panama (J P Samartzis ) renamed Dido. 1985 sold to Supertrans Nav. Co., Limassol, Cyprus (V Maltezos) renamed Teti. 31 March 1989 abandoned by crew after fire and explosion, 33.49N/122.41E. 1990 scrapped in China.

I think there might be a photo in the gallery.
