Hello Durango
Below are some particulars and history of the motor vessels BOSCOMBE DOWN and WORTHY DOWN and also example voyages of the vessels under those names and previous and later names as per various issues of Lloyd’s Shipping Index 1939-77. The other data are from various editions of Lloyd’s Register and Lloyd’s Confidential Index, and other sources at Lloyd’s.
If you go to
http://kommandobryggan.se/transatlantic/glimmaren.htm and http://kommandobryggan.se/transatlantic/temnaren.htm, you will find images of both of these vessels as they were when owned by Transatlantic. Among the images are interior shots.
Hope that this is of interest.
Regards
Roger

Hello durango
Forgot to mention in my previous post, if you do a google search for Mann & Son (London) Ltd, you will find many links, including the company's own website, which has a brief history. The company is now located in Harwich and runs, among others, the Argo Line service to Germany.

Hello Roger many thanks for the imformation especialy the amount of it , the old Worthy Down will forever have a place in my heart , i joined her in Hong Kong on the the 23rd oct 1961 and paid off sick on the 29th jan 1962 at Shanghai where i spent a month in hospital , the chinese where very good to me , they sent me by train to Hong Kong i still have my visa and train tickets the visa is printed on rice paper , when the ship left me as far as i know she went to a northern port in China i beleive it is called Darren there she loaded rice for Cuba again as far as i know she sailed to Cuba via the cape of good hope ,i was flown home which when you think the company only had 2 ships was very genourous as far as i,m concerned being as the plane tickets where £208 one way in those days i was surprised they never sent me home d.b.s. anyhow i had to attend dreadnought seamens hospital once arriving home ,i was not fit to go back to sea until april 1962 i walked back into dock st pool [ leman st ] and the first ship i was offered was the Worthy Down running to south america i could not beleive it anyhow i politely declined and signed on the Crystal Gem instead i have a photo of the Worthy Down with what looks to me like a Houlder flag on her funnel so she may have been on a houlder brother charter again many thanks for taking the trouble to find out all the imformation best wishes ,Dave .

Just to add to Roger's excellent Boscombe Down voyage examples, she arrived New York 22/02/62 from Puerto Cabello and 21/04/62 I noted her in the Waalhaven, Rotterdam looking very unloved. Again she wended her way back to South America confirming a recurring connection.

ED&F Mann:-
In 1983 they owned at least 2 - SD14's, the Arafura Sea and another which I cannot accurately recall (but think it was the Bandar Sea.)
They may have owned many other vessels at the time - I don't know.
The Arafura Sea was in late 1983 and into 1984 Time Chartered to Hapag Lloyd.
I was temporary (relieving) master on the Arafura Sea November/ December 1983, when she ran from Antwerp to Red Sea Ports Jeddah, Port Sudan & Aquaba then returned to Antwerp & Hamburg loading for Argentina.
She was registered in Singapore and Managed at the time by Denholm Ship Management (Singapore).
She was manned by Singaporeans, except for myself ( a U.K. Master) and the U.K. Chief Engineer .
Quite a nice ship I recall. (Built in Brazil)
