Wrecked in 1973 off the Sunshine Coast in Queensland unladen and on her way to Brisbane from Auckland. The "now" picture shows how much she has deteriorated. Believe it or not, in spite of warning signs and barriers tourists still take their families clambering all over it, it is a disaster waiting to happen. The local council is now considering removing the wreck altogether in the fear of litigation

A few days ago I posted details of a wreck called the Cherry Venture. Out of curiosity I have tried to find out where she was built etc. So far all I have been able to find is that:

- she was born as the Scania in 1945
- Was renamed the Slott
- Then became the Timur Venture
- Her number was 500500773
- As the Cherry Venture she was Singaporean owned

Apart from all that I can find no details (apart from as a wreck) of where and by whom she was built.

Can anyone please help?

I couldn't find much in searching either apart from the usual repeated stories of what happened when she was wrecked, and a multitude of references to this being a "must see tourist spot". Looks like many holiday organisers have been using this as a place for outings.

Tried to find her on Google Earth but the image quality is pretty low in that area so didn't even get anywhere there!

Good luck with your quest for information Derek.

Information on the Cherry Venture

I will be able to give you some more details shortly. I know the girl whose father bought the Cherry Venture after she was shipwrecked, and the family actually lived on the shipwreck for many years before she deteriorated.

She has now been removed, and the metal cut up into scrap and sent to China for recycling. I have probably the last remaining piece (about 1 metre high weighing about 100 kilos), given to me by the person who bought her for scrap metal. He gave me the piece because I have painted a series of artworks called "Deconstructing Cherry Venture". If you would like to see my works, please visit http://www.visualartist.info/gaylehebbard

Will get back soon with more details.

Remember very well the night "Cherry Venture" went aground in 1973 - I was C/O of the Australian coastal containership "Manoora" at the time and we'd been steaming east and west off Caloundra Head for three nights, in the most appalling conditions of the tail end of a cyclone, which was offshore in the Tasman Sea. Eventually got into Brisbane on the fourth day! I recall one of our "companion" ships during those nights/days was an ex-Cunard cargo ship of Neptune Orient Lines with a very badly injured cadet on board - she was given priority over the rest of us for entry.

Reviving this old thread. I was asked by my then employer Seatankers Shipping Pte. Ltd. to go to NZ to bring the Cherry Venture back to Singapore. I had just had a rough 7 months as Master on an old and worn out tanker and refused, thus terminating my employment with them.
There is quite a bit about the grounding of Cherry Venture on another forum: http://www.captainsvoyage-forum.com...idents-and-disasters/759-cherry-venture-in-oz
