Which Ship?
From another MB, any one know the answer?
I am trying to do some research for a friend and wonder if you can help. A relative of hers, Janet Walker, Chief Stewardess of an Ellerman City Line ship, was called the modern Grace Darling after the ship on which she served was sunk sometime during the war. Unfortunately, she does not know the name of the ship or the date of the sinking. Thank you |

A guess would be City of Benares, Sept 1940-- well recorded in threads (just use the search facility) on this site and on the internet, as the ship was being used for the evacuation of children. If the friend knows of children having been involved, then I think that would be your one. It may at least be a place to start, but if i am incorrect and mislead you then I apologise in advance

Could be the City of Cairo, torpedoed i think somewhere off St Helena in 1942. The stewardess was a bit of a heroine but sadly did not survive the long time spent in an open boat. I think there was a book written about it. The U-Boat captain surfaced and apologised for sinking them but would not break radio silence for fear of giving his position away. Hope this is useful. el_scripto |
