No longer possible Jim, under the Jones Act. cargo and passengers between U.S. ports must be carried in U.S. flagged ships, built in the U.S. Foreign shipowners have complained about this for years but it does keep cheap foreign crews out of U.S. Home Trade waters (which extend all the way round from Maine to Alaska including Hawaii and Puerto Rico).
Looking at what has happened to the Red Duster, I don't blame them one bit.

Another reason it's no longer possible is that during the time you were there, that was good old days: just after the war, full of excitement and hope for the future. Unfortunately in 1949 the Chinese nightmare started and still going on to this day!

No Keltic Star, China got nothing to do with the Jones Act. The point is merely that whatever Jim experienced around 1946-47 is no longer possible since 1949 -- the start of China's dark age nightmare and continuing to this day.
