Awatea
New Zealand's most notable ship was undoubtedly the Awatea, 13482 tons, built 1936 for the Auckalnd, Sydney, Wellington Service. The Awatea reduced the voyage time to two and a half days - remarkable consistency making her a legend in her own lifetime. In 1940 following the outbreak of war, she proceeded to Manila to embark refugees, after which several voyages were made to Vancouver and one to Colombo. In 1941 the Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport, and later converted to an infantry landing ship. As such she was bombed and sunk off Algeria in 1942.
