I'm looking for a photo of the RFA Oilers War Nizam and Petronel, for my Grandfather, details below:

WAR NIZAM was built by Palmers SB & Iron Co. Ltd, Hebburn on Tyne in 1918
5592 feet 400 tons
Shipping Controller, managed by British Tanker Co;
1921 transferred to Admiralty;
1937 Royal Fleet Auxiliary;
1939 depot ship at Devonport,
1947 BASINGHALL, Basinghall Shipping Co, London;
1949 scrapped Antwerp.

PETRONEL
(Dunlop, Bremner, 1918).
(description: 1 funnel with 1 mast just before, both raking and aft of amidships)
1024 tons.
Dimensions: 164 x 28 x 11.5, feet. I.H.P. 500 = 9 - 10 kts.
Own oil: 50 tons Cylindrical boilers. Complement, 16.

Can anyone help?

Sorry not one of the Nizam but one of Diwan part of the first series of War ships.The others were Bahadur,Nawab,Pathan and Sepoy.
I have a pic of Petrobus but it does not copy well,along with Petrella and Petronel the three were Pet class spirit carriers.
Will put a pic of War Diwan on to the H M ships gallery for you.

As it happens, I am interested in PETRONEL, because
she later became the ATHELGLEN (1949), scrapped 1958, as MOLAGLEN.
Please could I ask if anyone has a photograph of PETRONEL or any of her
sisters?

Only have pics of Petrobus which was identical to Petronel and Petrella.
Petronel spent most of her life as a water boat for the Atlantic Fleet and accompanied the Fleet on their cruises.In 1945 she was sold to the Bulk Oil Co.Ltd,who renamed her Pass of Glencoe in 1947 and used her for coastal work.In 1949 she was sold to the British Molasses Co Ltd and renamed Athelglen.They later transferred her to the West Indies,and renamed her Molaglen.She was scrapped in 1958-59.

I have 4 photos of Petronel working with the Fleet in the 1930's. I can reduce them to about 140KB each which still appears to be too big to attach to a post on the site. If you give me an email address I will send them to it.

War Nizam is interesting. I have over 150 photo PCs of the other RFA War class but none of the War Nizam. Neither does the National Maritime Museum or the RFA HQ archive. She is a mystery ship. Three or four dealers are looking for an image of her. If I get one, I'll let you know.

Hi,

I have PC photos of all the 3 sisters. If you are still interested, I can scan them.

I have 4 of PETRONEL working with the Fleet in the 30's, 6 of PETROBUS and 2 of PETRELLA. They will scan as PC sized jpegs at about 150KB. I would be interested in swapping any images of PETRONEL as ATHELGLEN or MOLAGLEN if you have them. I am trying to compile a complete record of RFAs for future publication and would be happy to acknowledge your contribution.
