First I'm going to be picky and then pose a question.

Picky bit. This forum is named Manchester Line. The company was called Manchester Liners.

Now the question. The Manchester Brigade and the Manchester Division were completed at Irvine's shipyard in 1918. My 'Pictorial History' of the company states that the Manchester Division gained instant fame on her maiden voyage from the West Hartlepool shipyard, to join a convoy at Portsmouth, when she rammed and sank a German submarine in the North Sea.

I never got round to paying a subscription to uboat.net, but my u boat library which seems to be fairly comprehensive makes no mention of a u boat loss that I could link to the story. I doubt any of us were on her at the time, but does anyone know anything about this?

At least it will give us something to puzzle over apart from Ron's avatar.

Thought it looked like a weird torso with a head between hunched shoulders. Hadn't spotted it was the top bit of the British School of Motoring Logo.

Years ago all BSM instruction vehicles had an L plate mounted on a bigger plate with the company logo on them.

I think I've attached a copy of the logo to this...

Ron, you might have wreaked your magic and got rid of the cloud, made a decent photo of it! Still I see Rothbury and Jam Jar City are both on there.
